If you have sagging in the skin of your forehead, upper eyelids, and/or eyebrows, a plastic surgery procedure called a forehead lift will restore a more youthful appearance for both men and women.
Cecil Yeung, MD, FACS, is one of the most skilled and accomplished brow and forehead lift surgeons in the Houston area. He is well-known for his minimally invasive and precise surgical techniques, delivering the most natural-looking and long-lasting results with shorter recovery periods.
In this blog, Dr. Yeung will explain everything you need to know about a forehead lift.
When is a forehead lift recommended?
A forehead lift, also called a brow lift may be recommend if you wish to:
- Diminish horizontal wrinkle lines across the forehead
- Diminish wrinkle lines that develop on the bridge of the nose and between the eyes
- Reduce vertical frown lines between the eyebrows
- Lift droopy brows which cause hooding of the upper eyelids
- Place eyebrows in a lively and more younger-looking position
What is a forehead lift?
In a forehead or brow lift, your plastic surgeon makes small incisions in the hairline and lifts saggy brow lines. This eliminates deep wrinkles and other signs of aging.
What is involved in a forehead lift?
First, you'll be given anesthesia, either general or intravenous. You and your doctor will discuss this beforehand.
Then, your surgeon will perform a brow lift using one of two methods:
- Classic lift (also called: Brow lift - coronal incision)
- Endoscopic lift (also called: Brow lift - endoscopic incision)
Classic Lift
With a classic lift, your surgeon makes one continuous incision. The cut starts at the level of your ears and runs along your hairline, across the top of the head. If you have a high forehead, the incision may be made only at the front of the head, to preserve your natural hairline.
The forehead skin is then lifted and muscles adjusted to reduce lines. Depending on where your hairline is, the surgeon places the cuts to avoid visible scarring.
Endoscopic Lift
With an endoscopic lift, your doctor makes several small cuts in your scalp. Then, an endoscope is inserted (a tiny camera mounted on a thin tube) into one of the incisions. Another instrument is used inside a different incision to make the adjustments needed by securing small anchors to the tissues.
Because the cuts are smaller, this procedure is less invasive than the classic lift. You’ll have minimal scarring and a shorter recovery time.
In either type of lift, incisions can be closed with any of the following:
- Removable sutures
- Non-removable sutures (they absorb into the body)
- Specially-made anchoring clips
- Skin adhesives
- Surgical tape
What can you expect after a forehead lift?
Results appear over time as swelling and bruising diminishes, exposing a smoother forehead and a more alert, rested and younger-looking appearance.
There will be differences in recovery that will depend on the type of lift procedure you had: classic or endoscopic.
If you had removable stitches or staples, used in each type of lift, they'll be removed in about a week.
If you have temporary anchors holding your brow in place, your surgeon will remove them in about two weeks.
There will be some swelling and bruising, even in areas not involved in the surgery, like your cheeks and eye areas. The swelling should be gone in about a week. Ice packs and keeping your head elevated help ease the swelling.
Should you get a forehead lift?
It's recommended you have a forehead lift if you are troubled by any of the following signs of aging:
- Unattractive wrinkle lines on the forehead that make you look older
- Vertical frown lines between the brows that make you look angry (when you aren't)
- Relaxed skin that causes the eyebrows to sag
- Hooded upper eyelids that make you look always tired
