Although facelifts are a widely recognized cosmetic surgery, there are many myths surrounding this procedure. One of the biggest sources of confusion is what’s included in a facelift and what’s not.
Here, facial plastic surgeon Dr. Cecil Yeung explains the facelift options at The Yeung Institute in Houston, Texas.
What a facelift includes
The skin on your face is some of the most delicate and thinnest skin on your body, which means the signs of aging can appear here sooner than in other places. Not only does your skin lose elasticity (goodbye, collagen!) and sag as a result of the natural aging process, other factors 一 genetics, sun exposure, and even smoking 一 affect the appearance of your skin.
That’s where a facelift comes into play. Called a rhytidectomy, this surgical procedure is designed to reduce the signs of aging on your face. There are many aspects and techniques included in a facelift that work together to restore a more youthful, revitalized appearance.
A facelift can:
- Lift and tighten loose facial skin
- Reduce visible signs of aging on your face
- Eliminate wrinkles around your nose and mouth
- Enhance the contour of your jawline
- Tighten your jowls
- Remove submental fat
Specific techniques that are included in your surgery may vary depending on which type of facelift you choose.
Two types of facelifts
Dr. Yeung may recommend either an endoscopic mid-facelift or a deep plane facelift, depending on your specific aesthetic coals.
A minimally invasive endoscopic mid-facelift focuses on your cheeks, jowls, and laugh lines.
A deep plane facelift 一 a cosmetic surgery that relies on techniques pioneered by Dr. Yeung 一 focuses on the lower portion of your face. During this surgery, Dr. Yeung tightens facial muscles as well as your skin. By targeting specific facial muscles, you benefit from remarkable natural-looking results.
What’s not included in a facelift
In 2020 alone, 2.3 million cosmetic surgical procedures were performed, and that included 234,374 facelifts and over 325,000 eyelid surgeries. This statistic is important because it highlights the fact that facelift surgeries don’t include eyelid lifts, called blepharoplasty.
While a facelift doesn’t target your eyes, you can combine procedures to customize your look. A blepharoplasty can enhance the appearance of your eyes and be performed at the same time as a facelift, but it’s not included in a facelift.
Similarly, Dr. Yeung performs neck lift surgery, which beautifully complements the results of your facelift. A neck lift can remove loose skin or excess fat, tighten tissues and muscles, and enhance the contour of your jawline.
