Blepharoplasty (Eyelid)
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Eyelid surgery (technically called blepharoplasty) is divided into 2 categories: upper and lower. Droopy eyelids can make you look older and can also impair vision. Blepharoplasty corrects these problems and also removes puffiness and bags under the eyes that make you look worn and tired. This procedure cannot alter dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, nor can it change sagging eyebrows. Though blepharoplasty is often performed as a single procedure, your surgeon may also recommend a browlift, facelift, or skin resurfacing to achieve the best results. Together, these procedures remove the excess fat and skin from both the upper and lower lids. The results can be a refreshed appearance, with a younger, firmer eye area. During your consultation Dr. Yeung will help you decide whether any additional surgery will complement the success of the surgery. For example, a simultaneous forehead lift or brow lift may help correct a drooping brow and smooth the forehead, followed by a chemical peel for deeper lines and crows feet. The surgery can be done in the office and requires little to no down time. Sutures are removed in three to five days. The procedure takes about 2 hours with in office local sedation.
Am I a Suitable Candidate?
Sagging facial features such as excess skin above or below the eye are signs of ageing.
I’ve heard you can remove the fat from under the eye area to reduce puffy eyes. What kind of eyelid surgery does the Yeung Institute do?
Bleph surgeries are performed with different achievements in mind. Dr. Yeung, however does not believe in simply removing the puffy area. The reason for this is due to the puffy area under the eye is seen due to the cheek’s position. When the face begins to sag, the distinction between the lower eye and upper cheek become apparent with a half-moon shaped line. When there is truly excess skin, that skin will be removed on upper and lower lids as needed. However, the volume decrease among the eye area that allows the eye to look hollow can be addressed with a fat transfer as well. See the fat transfer link for more information.
Where will my scars be at?
Scars will be located along the crease line to conceal visibility. Dr. Yeung’s techniques allow for a seamless look after the incisions have healed.
How long does the procedure take?
Most blepharoplasties are done simultaneously with other procedures, resulting in varying times. A upper or lower bleph alone can take 1-2 hours depending upon the complexities such as preserving ethnic features. Time is a concern to many for health reason involving anesthesia or simply for financial reasons. See the Anesthesia link for frequently asked questions regarding our procedures. Anesthesia is a cost separate of the other fees for surgery. If cost is a factor, we can give you the Anesthesia Group’s information to see what financing options are available to you.
What risks or complications are involved in a Blepharoplasty?
Every surgical procedure involves a certain amount of risk and it is important that you understand these risks and the possible complications associated with them. In addition, every procedure has limitations. An individual’s choice to undergo a surgical procedure is based on the comparison of the risk to potential benefit. Although the majority of patients do not experience these complications, you should discuss each of them with Dr. Yeung to make sure you understand all possible consequences of eyelid surgery.
Any surgical procedure requires smokers and use of NSAIDS to be eliminated two weeks prior to surgery. A skin care regimen will be recommended prior to prep the skin for surgery. All detailed surgical requirements will be reviewed during your comprehensive pre-operative appointment.
How long is the Recovery?
A certain degree of swelling and bruising is normal. Cold eye gels are used immediately the day after surgery to reduce swelling. For a week after surgery the eyes may feel sticky, dry, and itchy. Eye drops are recommended and sterile ointment is prescribed to keep the eye area clean. Sutures are removed in three to five days after surgery. Self absorbing stitches will dissolve on their own.
