Fat Transfer (Autogolous Fat Graft)
As we age, we start to notice changes among the face. The position, volume and skin are three important factors in the visible signs of age. A key element such as the volume can be addressed by a fat transfer.
Am I a Suitable Candidate?
Areas around the mouth and eyes begin to hollow out over time from the depletion of volume. These areas often make a person appear tired or even older than they truly are. A fat transfer to replenish those areas will reduce the visible signs of ageing.
I’ve heard over half the fat does not stay. Is this true?
Yes and no. A fat transfer is done by harvesting fat from another location of the body (typically the buttocks) and processed. After that, it is then injected with a special technique to fill in the areas of volume loss. Those fat cells need to have sufficient blood supply to survive. We require our patients to do minimal movement for approximately two weeks to allow the maximum survival rate. When a person talks or is constantly moving the mouth, it lessens the chance of survival, resulting in another fat transfer procedure to make up for the loss of fat cells. Fat transfer to the eye area has a better survival rate than that of the mouth area.
Is the fat transfer the same as stem cell grafting?
Stem cells are found when the fat is harvested from the body and used to help rejuvenate the area. Although stem cells are in our fat transfer, Stem Cell Grafting is slightly different. Stem Cell Grafting is a more concentrated version of stem cells that are used for many purposes including rejuvenation.
Where will my scars be at?
Dr. Yeung uses a special technique that allows for no visible markings of having a fat transfer. No incisions are made with this type of procedure.
How long does the procedure Take?
Most fat transfers are done simultaneously with other procedures, resulting in varying times. A fat transfer alone can take 1-3 hours depending upon the style. Time is a concern to many for health reason involving anesthesia or simply for financial reasons. See the Anesthesia link for frequently asked questions regarding our procedures. Anesthesia is a cost separate of the other fees for surgery. If cost is a factor, we can give you the Anesthesia Group’s information to see what financing options are available to you.
What risks or complications are involved in a Fat Transfer?
Every surgical procedure involves a certain amount of risk and it is important that you understand these risks and the possible complications associated with them. In addition, every procedure has limitations. An individual’s choice to undergo a surgical procedure is based on the comparison of the risk to potential benefit. Although the majority of patients do not experience these complications, you should discuss each of them with Dr. Yeung to make sure you understand all possible consequences of a fat transfer.
Any surgical procedure requires smokers and use of NSAIDS to be eliminated two weeks prior to surgery. A skin care regimen will be recommended prior to prep the skin for surgery. All detailed surgical requirements will be reviewed during your comprehensive pre-operative appointment.
How long is the Recovery?
Recovery and downtime will vary upon exact facelift procedure. Typical downtime with most procedures is 10-14 days. You will take up to a year to completely heal, however at 2 weeks most are presentable.
